We did it! International Volunteer Day (IVD)

International Volunteer Day (IVD) took place in San Telmo Park of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on December 5th, 2012. The official opening started with the inauguration speech of the General Director of Youth of the Canary Islands, Doña Estefania Castro Chavez, the European project coordinator of Centro Intercultural Ideas de Colores Kristina Cernousovaite and the President of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Don José Miguel Bravo de Laguna

We built NGO market with many local, national and international organizations as Asociación Asperger Islas Canarias ASPERCAN, Asociación Canaria Cáncer de Mama y ginecológico ACCMYG, Asociación Canaria de Personas con Trastorno Generalizado del Desarrollo ACTRADE, Asociación de Celíacos de la Provincia de Las Palmas, Asociación de Personas Sordas de Gran Canaria, AVAFES Canarias – Asociación Veterinaria para la atención a la fauna exótica y silvestre, Canarias en positivo, Centro Intercultural Ideas de Colores, Comisión Española de Ayuda al Refugiado CEAR, Coordinadora de ONGD de Canarias, Economía Social de Canarias ASESCAN, INAFA, La Nave, Médicos del Mundo Canarias, Radio ECCA, Solidaridad Médica Canaria, Unidad de Servicios Gamá-Imago and others.

In addition, the movie “Vidas Distantes”(Distant Lives) made by two young Lithuanians who participated in the European Voluntary Service in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, was screened as a part of the program of the Day. The documentary is about foreigners and immigrants presenting different views and speaking about stereotypes of their life in Gran Canaria. After the film projection, the directors discussed some of the issues presented by the film, such as integration and intercultural understanding.

Moreover, the agenda was full of interesting events and opportunities, for example free workshops as Drama, Salsa, Oriental dance, contemporary dance, African dance, African percussion, Photography, Origami and Recycling.

Last but not least, the International Volunteer Day 2012 provided amazing cultural exhibitions, concerts and performances of Brisa Canaria, Carlos Saguez, David Rodriguez, Ivan Perez Baez, JTC, Ofal, Roberto Jimenez, Ruben Rodriquez, Soraya Hernandez Brothers Studio Flamenco and Thioune.
