International volunteering day 2012

The intercultural center “Centro Intercultural Ideas de Colores” are organizing this event in order to make voluntary visible and promote voluntary and active youth and raise awareness. Concerts, dance, theatre, photography, film projection and many other free workshops will take place in the park to light up the event.

Parque San Telmo (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria)

The event will take place Wednesday, December 5th in San Telmo Park of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The program will be from 10 am to 9 pm, and we will have over 15 NGOs. They will be of various kinds and participate in this event to make volunteerism visible for the local youth.

The official opening ceremony starts at 10:30 am, with the speech of the General Director of Youth of the Canary Islands, Doña Estefania Castro Chavez and the President of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Don José Miguel Bravo de Laguna.

The “Centro Intercultural Ideas de Colores” Ideas organizes this project in collaboration with the Government of the Canary Islands Department of Youth and Cabildo of Gran Canaria, with the aim of informing the public about the impact of volunteerism for peace and integration of people with disabilities and immigrants, and the promotion of sustainable development, intercultural dialogue and international mobility.

Through various activities, many NGOs in the city will present their work and commitment to the development of society and present the many volunteering opportunities available for young people.

Besides the informational aspect, the day’s program will feature cultural activities. In the State Public Library San Telmo Park, will be screened at 10 am and 17 pm the movie “Vidas Distantes”(Distant Lives), by two young Lithuanians who participated in the European Voluntary Service in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The documentary is about the different views of foreign nationals and immigrants about life in Gran Canaria. After screening, the directors will discuss some of the issues presented by the film, such as integration and intercultural life.

Apart from the Film Forum, there will also be several free workshops: Drama, Salsa, Oriental dance, contemporary dance, African dance, African percussion, Photography, Origami and Recycling, that will take place in San Telmo Park.

The Volunteer Day 2012 will be completed with the performances of Brisa Canaria, Carlos Saguez, David Rodriguez, Ivan Perez Baez, JTC, Ofal, Roberto Jimenez, Ruben Rodriquez, Soraya Hernandez Brothers Studio Flamenco and Thioune.

The reason to celebrate “International Volunteer Day” grew out of the need to value the work of all the people who so selflessly to help those most in need and to increase public awareness of their contribution to society. Designed by the United Nations, has been celebrated worldwide from December 5th, 1985.
